Do We Need to Rethink Dog Types As Shelters Overflow?

Many animal shelters are so overcrowded that euthanasia rates are rising.   

Americans still buy pets from breeders and puppy farms while shelter dogs suffer. According to the American Pet Products Association's 2021-22 survey, 21% of dog owners got their pup from a breeder.   

Another 9% bought from pet retailers. Should we put breed and beauty aside and evaluate what we want in a new dog?   

Yes, potential dog owners should start at their local shelter. So people can adopt a dog that fits their lifestyle and personality regardless of breed or appearance.

People seek a certain dog breed or size. If you're patient, shelters and rescues have purebred dogs.  

Michael Keiley, director of adoption centers and programs at MSPCA-Angell in Boston, advises dog owners to "absolutely" visit shelters first. Both purebred and mutt dogs are there.
